The core component of PDC drill bits is the polycrystalline diamond coating, which is manufactured through high-temperature and high-pressure synthesis technology. Polycrystalline diamond is formed by the combination of many small diamond grains under high temperature and pressure. This structure gives PDC drill bits very high hardness and wear resistance, enabling drilling under extreme geological conditions.
The matrix of PDC drill bits is usually made of hard alloy, which has good strength and rigidity. Hard alloy is made by high-temperature sintering of metal carbide particles (such as tungsten carbide) and metal powder (such as cobalt). The function of this matrix is to support the polycrystalline diamond coating and transmit rotational and drilling forces into the rock.
